Better Body Language for Better Business

Meetings with clients, employees, and potential partners can cause great levels of stress and anxiety for some. For others, meeting and greeting new people is an exciting part of work that they approach with enthusiasm and gusto. However you see it, networking and making a great impression are essential to the growth and success of your business. Here are some easy pointers for every kind of communicator.

The Basics
Confidence can be demonstrated by very simple motions, and just as easily undermined. The most important of these are steady eye contact, open arms and legs that aren’t crossed or holding anything as a shield, and naturally straight posture. The key to looking natural is to practice this body language at all times in order to change the way you carry yourself. Even if you are just enjoying some evening television, try to maintain a straight back and open arms (it’s actually better for your body in the long-term too).

Small Signals
Fidgeting and fussing with hair or clothing obviously makes you appear nervous, but also distracts from the conversation. Avoid drumming your fingers on the table, checking your watch or clocks, or playing with the stem of your drink glass. Try slowing all of your movements down a bit and you’ll see an immediate improvement. Take control of your hands and use them to complement what you are saying with emphasising gestures rather than forgetting them completely.

Attitude Really is Everything
Smile, nod, and lean into your colleague just a little. Continue to prove you are actively engaged by laughing at jokes, expressing concern facially, and using your very best manners. Above all, relax and assume things will work out for the best. Worry about getting the job done before worrying about your image. Wherever your focus lies, it will almost certainly show on the outside.
